Meet the Designer: Anna Brown
We asked each of our Designers in Residence to tell us a little about themselves:
What is the name of your line? ANNA BROWN
Describe your line in three words (or less!)... quiet statement pieces.
I am inspired by… I usually create a collection by building a narrative, often layering a historical stye of workwear with an artistic movement, seen through the lens of modern impulse: for spring 17, for example, I'm looking at the Women's Land Army movement, naturalist botanical drawings, and the desire to collect (nature, antiques, buttons, whatever!)
I first knew I wanted to be a designer when… Even as a kid, I always created or embellished my own clothes; as an adult, I decided to see if other people would let me do it for them!
If I could have lunch with one person, alive or dead, it would be… Pablo Picasso
The fashion designer I most adore is… Yohji Yamamoto
If I could dress anyone in the world, it would be… Angela Merkel. Arguably the most powerful woman in the world today, and she's gotten there without giving a damn about fashion.
My biggest fashion faux pas was…None! Not because I've always been absurdly fashionable, but because I don't really think there are fashion mistakes, if one thinks of fashion as a medium of self-expression.
My favorite piece of clothing is… a thrifted vintage Woolrich men's over shirt that I wear as a fall jacket.
Every well-dressed woman should have… self-confidence.
I can’t live without…Love and friendship, powered by coffee or wine, depending on the time of day.
My happy place is… my neighborhood public pool on a hot day in July.
I am obsessed with…vintage work wear and Looney Toons characters.
My motto is…
sleep on it.
